Vanessa Lang in her kitchen

Hi, I’m Vanessa

A few years ago, I had to text my mother-in-law and ask her how to bake a potato.

Seriously. I didn’t grow up knowing how to cook from scratch, bake bread, or roast a whole chicken. I learned because I wanted to, through a lot of questionable dinners and three little kids asking what’s for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every single day.

Now making food from scratch is one of my favorite parts of homemaking. These are the recipes I’d hand you if you were standing in my kitchen. If no one taught you either, you’re in the right place.

– Vanessa

Is it really free?

Yes. There’s no payment and no credit card.

I’m a total beginner. Where do I start?

Make the ranch first. It takes five minutes. Then try the mac & cheese or sheet pan pancakes.

Do I need special equipment?

Mostly everyday basics. A few recipes use a cast iron skillet, Dutch oven, loaf pan, or sheet pan, and each recipe tells you which.

Start with one recipe this week.
